Genetic Predisposition to Mesothelioma
Although the most common risk for developing the deadly cancer of mesothelioma has been said to be asbestos exposure, other risk factors have been researched in recent years. Not everyone exposed to asbestos has contracted mesothelioma. Even though 27 million workers were exposed to asbestos in the past, each year there is only a low percentage of these people who die of this cancer.
Genetics and Mesothelioma
To understand a bit about genetics, it is necessary to know that the hereditary material called DNA makes up chromosomes. Chromosomes are contained in the nucleus of cells. Sections of the chromosomes are genes. Researchers began to study genes in order to see how they related to mesothelioma, as sometimes the disease seemed to run in families and sometimes people seemed more prone to develop the cancer than others.
Not long ago, researchers did find a gene that might identify those more at risk than others in contracting malignant mesothelioma. They were trying to answer the question as to why some people got cancer when exposed to asbestos and others did not.
One study discovered a family of three siblings who were missing a gene that is known to suppress tumors. Each sibling lacked that particular chromosome structure which made them susceptible to tumor growth. They had all also been exposed to asbestos because they lived near an cement factory that used asbestos in the product. They each had an asbestos-related disease. Two of them had mesothelioma.
Another study conducted research with two separate families with high incidences of the mesothelioma cancer. Each family member who contracted the disease had a gene that was mutated. The gene is named BAP1 and the mutation is called the BAP1 mutation. Additionally, it was found that all these family members did not suffer from mesothelioma but had other types of cancer. Some of the other cancers found in those with a BAP1 mutation were:
• Skin cancer
• Pancreatic cancer
• Breast cancer
• Ovarian cancer
• Uveal melanoma
Continued research was done with another twenty-six individuals and it was found that 25 percent of them had the mutations of this gene.
Other Risks for Mesothelioma
Other risks for mesothelioma exist as well. There are two other genes that, when a person lacks them, are linked to an increased risk of malignant mesothelioma. These are the NAT2 and the GSTM1 genes. When both of these genes are absent, the person’s risk for cancer is sevenfold.
